Have gotten weirder and weirder. gamefly just sent me infinite undiscovery and eternal sonata at the same time....JRPG overload! i havent played one since final fantasy 10 which was really bizarre, but these games are a little too much. They're just.....stupid, kind of. The story lines are so outrageously corny, and the characters in both games are really lame. I'm talking curly blonde locks, shiny black buckled shoes, and even a pair of little kid siblings that parade around like fairys. The gameplay in both games are good enough to keep me playing them, but......seriously. is this what the japanese consider ''cool''???JRPGs......
Play Lost Odyssey or wait for ff13. i heard tales if good, havent played it though.JRPGs......
jumping 20 storie buildings, swinging gigantic swords (yeah everyone knows the kind of jokes that are going to be popping up) and wearing skull shirts is ''cool''
Meh, the characters weren't that great in Eternal Sonata (except for Falsetto who is just balls to the wall awesome) and they seem pretty wretched in Infinite Undiscovery as well. At least the battle system was awesome in Eternal Sonata, so that kept me playing. The story in Eternal Sonata was forgetable, but it was ''cute'' at times. If you want a good story and characters, then get Tales of Vesperia. Best JRPG on the 360 in my opinion. Lost Odyssey was solid as well, but a couple of the characters are just terrible.

Wow Sammy. Most people are the opposite of you - they like the story, but they dont like the gameplay.
I think your just one of those boring people who only like 'realistic' stories and think anything containing fantasy is stupid.

[/QUOTE]No no! i like crazy stories and i dont mind fantasy at all, i just think the stories in these two specific games leave a little to be desired, thats all.
I played the ES demo and yeah I couldn't stand that it looked like it was made for 5 year olds. Yokofox, is Star Ocean really childish or dumb too? LO looks good and I'll get ToV on PS3. LO and SO have me on the fence.
Get Lost Odyssey for a more serious JRPG.Get Blue Dragon for an old-school SNES-era style JRPG.The rest are kinda odd, imo. Mistwalker's games have a certain charm to them. The others this gen seem to lack that.
Most jrpgs, even the more serious ones, like to include some off-beat quirkiness in their games.
As a fan of both genres, I do see your point about JRPG games getting weirder. Ironically, even the JRPG games on playstation like Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were pretty weird. Still, there are many things that WRPG and JRPG games differ on. For example, the style of characters in JRPG games is very different than those of Western RPG games. The male characters in a JRPG have a more femine look with a thinner body, long or spikey hair, and uncanny clothing. The male characters in WRPG seem to be more muscular with a deeper voice and normal hairstyles. This comparison doesn't make one better than the other, but I'm just trying to point out that there are differences between these two different styles of RPG games.
I have noticed changes in storys are different as well. JRPG have great stories, but most of their storylines are linear when compared to WRPG. For example, Final Fantasy XII had one ending, same with FFX, Eternal Sonata, and Star Ocean. Eternal Sonata was a really cool idea and story. I want to try out Lost Odyssey soon as I've heard nothing but good things about it. Anyways, back to the subject. JRPG don't have an open world that allows you to go anywhere and do anything like Morrowind does. WRPG seem to give players more control of their fate. Games like KOTOR and Mass Effect had multiple endings. Whether it's exterminating a species, joining the dark side, or rescuing slaves, there just seem to be more options in WRPG games. Other WRPG like Fallout 3 and Oblivion allow you to continue even after the main quest is complete.
Even though I still like JRPG games, I am finding myself enjoying Western RPG games more this decade. Games like Mass Effect, KOTOR, Elder Scrolls, and Jade Empire are an absolute delight.
